纵观元始天尊的演变过程,可以发现“元始”一词原是道家舒述世界本源的哲学用语,后来被道教加以神化,逐渐演变成道教的尊神,居于三清。从历史角度上考察,这与道家演变成道教的历史完全相吻合。
据《历代通鉴》记载,元始天尊“顶负圆光,身披七十二色”,故供奉在道教三清大殿中的元始天尊,一般都头罩神光,手执红色丹丸,或者左手虚拈,右手虚捧,象征“天地未形,混沌未开,万物未生”时的“无极状态”和“混沌之时,阴阳未判”的大世纪,故以阳生阴降、昼短夜长的冬至日为元始天尊的圣诞。长期以来,元始天尊受到了上至帝王圣贤,下至民间善男信女的虔诚崇拜。

在通常的道教宫观内都要供奉他们的塑像,为他们专门建造祭祀之处,称为三清殿或三清宫。他们的排列顺序为:正中间的是元始天尊,他左手虚拈,右手虚捧,象征着世界的原始状态;他的左边是灵宝天尊,手中捧着一个阴阳镜,象征着世界刚走出混沌时的状态;右边是道德天尊,手里拿着一把画有阴阳镜的扇子,象征着世界被创造的状态。在道家艺术中,关于三清的雕塑和画像内容非常丰富,至今仍然保留着许多精品。

顺帝时(126~144)张陵在巴蜀鹤鸣山创立五斗米道,即奉老子为教主。据传张陵在传教布道时作的《老子想尔注》称:“一者道也。……一在天地外,入在天地间,但往来人身中耳。……一散形为气,聚形为太上老君,常治昆仑,或言虚无,或言自然,或言无名,皆同一耳。”在道书中出现了太上老君的名号。至魏晋南北朝,太上老君之名益显。
