HRL开发的SiOC的3D技术突破了传统陶瓷及复合材料制备的局限性。其中，利用已有的台式三维光刻系统设备将陶瓷前驱体聚合物逐层打印并固化成所希望的形状，保证了增材制备的可行性；通过惰性环境下的高温处理使树脂材料反应形成较高纯度的陶瓷，一方面维持了3D打印所得到的外形，另一方面获得了高性能的陶瓷基复合材料——采用传统的烧结方法得到的陶瓷在反应过程中内部会出现大量孔隙，而这种3D打印方法有效避免了孔隙的引入，能够得到高致密度的陶瓷类材料，从而使材料的硬度、强度、耐磨性、抗腐蚀性、高温性能等均有了明显提高——可耐受1400℃高温环境不致收缩或开裂，强度提高至同等密度陶瓷的10倍，制备速度相比于前期3D打印提高了100~1000倍——因此这种方法得到的构件在结构形状与尺寸上基本不受约束，可以满足更宽泛的结构需求。
该类SiOC材料具备的性能，有望达到航空器动力系统与高超声速飞行器的大型构件，电子设备与微机电系统中复杂部件等的使用要求，目前受到了AFRL的重点关注。AFRL希望使用这种SiOC材料制备热辐射防护罩等功能件，并在2018年与HRL签订了一份合作研发—材料转让协议（Cooperative Research and Development – Material Transfer
